A little over a year ago, as we were scouting for a way to invest the Washington DC market, we sat down with our old friend Jeff Segal. We had no idea that this quick dinner would yield such an important project at that time, but within just a few meetings, we all agreed to partner up and build the wine shop we've been dreaming of. Jeff used to run a wine bar in San Francisco called "Heart", somehow the only game in town beside the place Cory and I worked at, and we would find ourselves at Jeff's bar often, getting to know him. He then became a good costumer, the first to buy Belluard from us, "These wines make no sense, no one knows that grape, prices are too high, and yet, I can't stop thinking about them, send a case of each" is what he told me after a night thinking about Dominique's Gringet bottlings.
Jeff eventually sold Heart and moved to NYC, a little before I did, and we found ourselves talking about the wine business and his desire to come back to it at some point. We both became parents, he didn't have it in him to be a wine rep when Selection Massale was nothing, can't say I blame him, but we always talked, and somehow, I'd like to think that in the back of our minds, we both knew we'd do something together someday.
Well, Domestique is here, opening today, a wine shop focused exclusively on Organic wines made naturally, fermented with ambient yeasts and with a careful use of sulfur when needed. Wines that fit our esthetic, clean, terroir driven, transparent wines. It's no secret that we aren't into every single cute new label coming up in the market if it smells like every other bacterial soup already imported. Our selection is harsh, the same way it is with our imports, except this time we are allowed to have fun with all of our friends wines!
We will also represent a great selection of liqueurs and distillates, beers and ciders, following the same principles when possible.
